If you just joined the road crew, there are some rules that you need to follow.
1. This is about your time.
"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give." (Matthew 10:8)Do not take money.
Do not ask for money or donations for you or this group.
2. Stop for disabled travelers.
If you have on your T-shirt, it means you are willing to stop and talk to someone you come in contact with.
Do not pass by them.
“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side." Luke 10Give them a push.
"But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him."Give them a jump start.
"He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine."Call a tow truck if you cannot get them started.
"Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him."This is why it is important to have a list of resources in your area so you can find someone to take care of him/her.
Do not judge the details of what they are telling you. Just listen to what they want to share and share with them what would help them know you understand to give them hope back.
Remember, you are not a mechanic.
Do not try to fix them on the spot. Have a list of resources in your area for who can help them with what they need.
As a volunteer, consider your own safety.
Do not go to a stranger's home or get into a stranger's vehicle.
Do not give them money.
Do not give personal information other than how you want them to be able to contact you.
Share what you want to and remind them that what is said between the two of you remains that way, just between you and him/her.
Be a positive example to those you are speaking with.
Leave politics out of the conversation.
Remember, this is not a contest! It is the person you are listening to who probably has not had anyone to talk to in a long time. Let them talk.
Pay attention! Do not look at your cellphone or check to see what time it is. If you do not have unlimited time, do not start a conversation. Give them your contact information or mine. The worst thing is getting someone to open up and then you have to leave them feeling as if they should not have trusted you to begin with.
If you have to leave soon after they ask, let them know before those flood gates open up.
