Peter Tuerk, the director of a VA PTSD program, introduces how we process experiences and trauma. Using examples from his research, he describes how it's possible to process memories and their associated meanings to overcome a traumatic incident. When active avoidance impedes natural recovery the most effective healing is facilitated through treatment designed to limit avoidance and to assist with the processing of relevant information.

Today is the last in the part about the power of forgiveness. When we consider all that we discussed so far between our mind, bodies and spirit, this is the hardest one of all to do. It is also the most important one if we are ever going to be empowered to heal.

PTSD Patrol: Don't stay stuck in the sand with a grudge

A day at the beach may sound like a good day, but not if you go there right before a hurricane!

You missed the signs in the sky and kept driving. You did not check the weather report. When it is too late and you are stuck in the sand, you could get angry that no one told you it was coming. The thing is, plenty of people were talking about it, but you didn't listen.

There is a storm in you when you have PTSD. Plenty of people are trying to tell you what you need to know but if you do not listen, it is not their fault.

There are also signs that you need to see when it comes to holding a grudge against someone. Maybe they tried to get you to listen to what you were doing, but you just got angry. Maybe they tried to tell you how you made them feel but you just got defensive.

For whatever reason you may think holding a grudge is justifiable, it is probably a bad idea like going to the beach on the wrong day.

When you have PTSD, you can start to understand what is going on with you but other people don't know until you explain it to them. You can always find a way to make your life easier with them by forgiving them and they'll forgive themselves too.b #BreakTheSilence and #TakeBackYourLife from #PTSD
As you can see, geese discovered they have an easier journey when they work together as a team. They lift others up, and in return, when they get tired, they are supported by the others. When it is like that in life, it is an amazing journey for you too!

So why not let them help you when you need it? Things can be so much better for you when you do and you'll be able to soar above the pain you are in faster!

There are many different places online referring to the power of forgiveness. Each one of them is helpful. For right now, Psychology Today has a great piece from 2015 by Mark Banschick MD.

Should You Forgive? Forgiving — sometimes easy, sometimes impossible

Forgiveness requires a special kind of thinking that is not always easy; a letting go, a putting things in perspective and an acceptance that the world has been unkind, or perhaps even cruel to you.

Forgiveness and Trauma:

When a psychological hurt lies deep in our minds, like an early trauma or deprivation, or a violent betrayal, forgiveness will require trauma work. This is because trauma wires your brain to a fight/flight mode that can be triggered in multiple ways - and sometimes daily. You strive to let go, but you find yourself reliving the event, over and over.  In order to do forgiveness work, you will have to deal with the depressive and often maladaptive ways that your mind processes trauma.

After surviving many other things in my life, the hardest one centered around domestic violence. That is what I am talking about in the video today.

Until I could forgive, there was no room in me for anything positive to get in. 

After talking about the mind and what PTSD does, we're moving onto the most important part in my view. That is your spiritual path towards healing. It's the windshield. Hanging onto the bad someone did to you, keeps good things from getting in. There is no room when bitterness consumes you. When you have PTSD, you are the driver of everyone in your life. It is just the way it is. When they do not understand what is going on inside of you, they end up putting all of it on their shoulders. Then, you don't know what you are doing to them. It gets very confusing for everyone. It is like getting lost on a road trip, losing your cell phone reception and your GPS. (If you're old like me, I remember reading a road map and having it blow out the window!)



My husband and I have been married over 35 years, so trust me, I get it. I know what PTSD did to him and also what it did to me. I can assure you that the road ahead can be tricky. It can feel like being stuck in traffic for hours. Knowing what PTSD is, and why it does what it does, having your passengers in life know, then it can be more like a pleasant Sunday drive!

With the debate about the virus and too many thinking it is a hoax, think of it this way. If you are wrong and discover it is real, then you may come to regret what you believed. If you are a good person, as most of you are, that will be really hard to take.

If I am wrong wearing one, then the worst that can happen is, I will look foolish thinking I did something for the right reason. In the end I won't feel bad about being wrong...I'll get a good laugh out of it. 
As you know, I have no problem laughing at myself!
So many nurses and doctors are pleading for citizens to wear a mask and stop spreading the virus. They are under tremendous stress because some people will not take this seriously. If you are stuck in mud you can spin your wheels and end up deeper in it, or you can call to get towed out of it.

Same thing with PTSD and you can get free of it with someone pulling you out from where you are stuck.

The people who can pull you out, have been right where you are before and tried all different ways to get back on the road. They figured out what did not work, but eventually, understood what did work!

When I was young I ran out of gas ⛽ and a stranger came to help me. If you are out of fuel, do not just sit there.

Everyone needs help at some time in their lives. Most people know what it feels like to help someone. It is wonderful all the way around. If you are usually the one who gives help, remember that! You are the one who has the hardest time asking for it, or even accepting it when it is offered. How would you feel if you offered help but they did not accept it?

If you are living with PTSD, you may need a little help to get you on the road again. Accept the help offered so that you can turn around and pass it onto someone else.

PTSD Patrol Roadside Assistance

There are many different times you may need help with getting on the road. There are also many different ways someone can help you with what you need in that time.

You may simply need a jump start and then you can ask a neighbor or call someone you know to help you. Other times, you can ask someone you see, who does not been to be a vehicle mechanic, but since you need something really basic, they can get your "vehicle" going again. Once you get recharged, you are on your way again.
Other times, like when you get into an accident, you need a lot more than a jumpstart. You need everything you can get. A tow truck to get your vehicle out of danger. You may need emergency response to get you to the professional medical care you need. Or, you may just need someone to get you back home.

It is the same thing when you are recovering from something traumatic and dealing with PTSD.

PTSD Patrol: Proceed With Caution

How many times have you been driving down a road, see a sign with "Proceed with caution" and immediately go on alert? It is human nature because you do not know what you are getting into.

If you have PTSD, get one of these signs and put it where you can see it to remind you to take the time to think before you do something you'll regret.

We have seen examples of what can happen when people are caught on video flipping out. The video goes viral and makes the person famous for the wrong reasons. Then they lose their jobs because their boss and coworkers have just witnessed a side of their character they had no clue existed before that. 

Some may think it is no ones business what someone does off the clock, but they are wrong. We get hired to do a job based on our skills and history, but the employer judges our character by what we show them. Show them a video like the viral ones, and no matter what you did in the past, no one will remember it.

With PTSD, part of it is dealing with anger and rage. You need to get control over that and learn how to proceed with caution because if you flip out, especially in public, the results can, and usually do, make it worse.

PTSD Patrol new mission has old reason

If you want to know why I gave up working with veterans and started working with everyone dealing with #PTSD it is because of stories like this. "Master Sgt. Andrew 'Andy' Christian Marckesano served 6 full tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne and the Ranger regiment" and committed suicide because he did not get the help he needed to heal from all that.

There are at least 8 million Americans with PTSD but few groups are doing anything about them suffering. Too many are focusing on "suicide awareness" for veterans, but again, not providing the help or knowledge they need to stay alive. It is so easy to talk about "doing something" but sometimes, it is actually worse than nothing. Master Sgt. Marckesano, should still be alive and he probably would have been if he could have found those who were willing to help him.

I was tired of competing with the groups getting in the way of that after dedicating 38 years of my life to that cause. Having survived traumatic events at least 10 times, I felt I had more to contribute to those who have been forgotten...average citizens and people working on the front lines trying to make a difference.

PTSD Patrol: Are your hazard lights on?

Yesterday we talked about how you actually send off signals, like the lights on the vehicle you drive, and people see all kinds of signs regarding the mood you are in. There is one that we did not discuss and that is one of the big ones...your hazard lights. When you read about the times you should use them, keep in mind that using them, lets people know your vehicle is in trouble!

Consider using your car’s hazard lights when:
👮Getting pulled over. If law enforcement signals you to pull over, turning on your hazard lights can show the officer that you acknowledge their signal and are following the request. Slow down, turn on your hazard lights, and stop your car in a safe location. 
👮Changing a tire on the side of the road. Use your hazard lights when your vehicle becomes a potential hazard for other road users. If you’re parked on the side of the road changing a tire, it’s generally okay to have your hazards on. 
👮Your car has broken down and you’re waiting for a tow. 
👮 Your car has become a temporary hazard and you’re waiting for assistance. Warn other drivers of your presence, especially if you are not able to move your car out of traffic.

👮 Driving in a funeral procession. Funeral processions are an exception to most hazard light guidelines. It’s customary for vehicles in a funeral procession to drive with their hazard lights on, even when it is otherwise prohibited by law.

You may be operating with your hazard lights flashing without knowing it. This happens when you are not in control of your reactions to others. #BreakTheSilence and #TakeBackYourLife from #PTSD

PTSD Patrol: What signals are you giving out?

If you had lights on your body, like you vehicle has, then you would automatically let people know what mood you're in.

Red lights: stop, do not approach, stay away
Yellow lights: OK with talking but proceed with caution
Regular lights: Normal conditions
High Beams: Upbeat mood

What if your forehead had lights like your dashboard does? It would let people know you needed service to be done and a mechanic. Your battery is running low. You are unbalanced. Your fuel is low or you have a full tank.

There are all kinds of signals you actually give. The trick is, noticing what signals you are giving so you can explain it to them. It will also help you understand what you are seeing in others.
Your vehicle has plenty of lights to notify others what you are doing and what you need to know as about what your vehicle needs. So do you.

We have been spending time with family and friends the last few days, practicing social distancing...which is extremely hard on a hugger like me. I was telling a relative why I switched to working with anyone with PTSD, instead of just focusing on veterans. With over 8 million people living with PTSD, plus everything else going on, those numbers are expected to grow. Then the question came up about why I do most of the videos in my garage.

A long time ago, there was a veteran I was having a hard time explaining what PTSD was and why it did what it did. He was running out of hope and so was I. We were near my car when it dawned on me that he understood his car better than he understood himself.

That was when I used "vehicle" as a metaphor for how to get from one place to another. It is easier to understand that we determine where we go, how to get there and how fast we travel, than it is to understand that the "vehicle" you live in, is really not that much different from the vehicle you drive. Basically, we're all in the garage.

The vehicles we live in (our bodies) face the same conditions the vehicles we drive do. There are road blocks, traffic jams, detours, other drivers, breakdowns and accidents. There are parts of our engines (our minds) that need to be serviced after diagnostic testing to see what needs to be repaired by a mechanic (mental health professional) who is trained to repair it. 

As for the journey itself, (our spirits) we need to be able to find the right road to get us where we want to get to (a happier life) with the vehicle we control. 

The logo is of a snowplow because no one get anywhere in a snow storm until the plows go out to clear the road, and that is my job. 

I survived things that could have killed me, statistically proven to cause PTSD, over 10 times. I had all the symptoms of post-traumatic-shock, which can develop into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Some factors that increase risk for PTSD include:

  • Living through dangerous events and traumas
  • Getting hurt
  • Seeing another person hurt, or seeing a dead body
  • Childhood trauma
  • Feeling horror, helplessness, or extreme fear
  • Having little or no social support after the event
  • Dealing with extra stress after the event, such as loss of a loved one, pain and injury, or loss of a job or home
  • Having a history of mental illness or substance abuse
****There are other causes that you may have experienced, but not on the list. ****
This is where #breakthesilence comes in!
  • Some factors that may promote recovery after trauma include:

    • Seeking out support from other people, such as friends and family
    • Finding a support group after a traumatic event
    • Learning to feel good about one’s own actions in the face of danger
    • Having a positive coping strategy, or a way of getting through the bad event and learning from it
    • Being able to act and respond effectively despite feeling fear
  • You can heal if you know how to get there. Step by step, like following your GPS, you will get there on the easiest roads!

Reading Thomas Paine The Crisis it is easy to see that "tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered" but we know it can be.
"THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated." 
Today, July 4th, this nation celebrates the freedom that was obtained by those who risked their lives and paid the price on the battlefields across this land and all those who we willing to pay the price so that it could be retained. 
 
"We hold these truths to be self evident...." in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, and very true words when applied to the "pursuit" of your happiness. The Declaration of Independence was the beginning of the fight for freedom from oppression. Achieving it did not happen over night.

The dream of freedom began long before July 4th 1776 when the document was established. The war did not end until the British troops were removed in 1782. There were 213,000 in the Continental Army.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." 
Your "self-evident" truth is that you are endowed by your Creator with everything you need to live a happier life and pursue a better future.

Abraham Lincoln called The Declaration of Independence “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression.” Now you are building a future when you can be independent from PTSD controlling your life.
"...Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world..."
Declare this day as the day you begin your fight to be free of the oppression of PTSD. 
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
 You cannot cure it but you can defeat it and it will remove forces that had been controlling your life! Remove this yoke and lighten the load you are taking on your journey. 

Begin this day with getting the burden off your back, and learn how to forgive. Healing is a time that does not have to try your soul!

Every vehicle on the road was designed for a specific purpose. A race car was designed to go fast and it was built that way. Construction equipment was designed to do a specific job and was built to do it. Plows were designed to clear things out of the way, and they were also built to do it. So were you!

If you are in any type of service to others, no matter what it is, you were tugged to do it because that is what you were designed to do. The wondrous thing is, you were also built to do it and endure whatever hardship came with what you were designed to do. It is all there, included in the plans for your purpose by design.
Jeremiah 29 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.
You will begin to learn how to connect what was included in your design to prosper, have hope for your future and be brought out of the captivity of PTSD.
